Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like conventional body horror, but beneath Together lies a deep examination about how we choose to love one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his social circle. He dreads the concept of completely losing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
