Around 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they stated in a release.
Police state they were notified late on Wednesday, when a individual noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.
The fluid had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Police then found numerous other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials say initial examinations indicate the fluid was probably human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; investigators are currently not cognizant of any harm in association with the occurrence," they stated.
Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the public for details.
A senior official commented the incident made him speechless and required to be resolved promptly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack in 2020," he stated on a platform, recalling the killing of nine people by a gunman targeting people of foreign heritage in 2020.
